WHY EVERYONE NEEDS AN ART DAY

Haha no, I’m not telling you guys to try and be the next Van Gogh or Da Vinci but if that’s what you want to do then by all means go ahead. I came to tell you guys the importance and benefits you will gain from taking a break once in awhile and having an art day  with the idea to focus on relaxing and letting your imagination take over for a few hours. This whole idea came from when I voluntarily asked one of my most creative friends what she was doing one Monday afternoon and it lead to hours of us painting and catching up with each other, which got me thinking about how beneficial just those few hours were and how much of a good time we both had. Which then of course, led to the making of this blogpost.. Why everybody needs an art day.

First off, creating art is very beneficial in the mental health area. It helps relieve stress,  and encourage creative thinking, perfect if you’re undergoing a lot of pressure at the minute. As an art student in general I sometimes feel obliged into making art suitable for a specific category so doing it within my free time allows me to let my mind wander and not be focused on one specific topic like it usually would.

A quote by the writer Thomas Merton that I love is “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time”. It’s true in the sense of getting lost in the moment, going through a patch where you feel like giving up, questioning what you’re doing again and then carrying on until you’ve completed your piece of art and are happy with the result. For me, I see art in everything.

If you are doubting your artistic abilities and think art is all about the end masterpiece then you are completely wrong already. I see art in the process, the emotions, the thought behind the creativity, and the ambition to create something new. Artists are people who create cars, houses, clothes, businesses, people who think before they do something, people who have stories to tell. In a way we’re all artists, so what makes you think you can’t create a piece of art too?

It’s proven that art can lower your stress level and leave you feeling mentally clear and calm. The average person has 60,000 thoughts per day and 95% are exactly the same day in, day out. Creating art is a way of escaping those thoughts and can be used as a distraction to clear your mind and bring in positive energy. Something that has become very popular now is adult colouring books, which is also a good strategy for coping with stress and therefore can be classed as an art day if you were to use them.  Anything from relaxing with a camera to painting on a canvas is considered an art day so take a break and let your imagination run wild once in every while.
